How cute are these?!  I think they are super cute.

They look like cake pops, but actually they are made using plain donut holes, a.k.a. munchkins.   I really think you are gonna love this time saving idea when you can’t make homemade cake pops (or just don’t want to…).

These are perfect for any occasion or just for fun.  I made these for my daughter’s “My Little Pony-Rainbow” birthday party, but they would be perfect for any occasion!

Dunkin Donuts Munchkin Pops

I was in a real pinch for time and wanted cake pops for the dessert table. Problem was I had no time left to make them. #Mommyproblems.  In all honesty, I’m not even sure I wanted to make them.  I love making things from scratch, but sometimes time savers are a mom’s best friend. Enter the faux-pop.  It’s a donut hole turned into a cake pop (a.k.a the donut pop). With a little trial and error these were time saving, delicious and really not that hard to make! They also were a HUGE hit!

IMG_8055I used these donut pops on a dessert/candy table for my daughter’s birthday, so I carefully organized them into a decorative container.  Alternatively, you could wrap them individually with lollipop/cake pop bags and use them as party favors.

The overall outcome of these semi-homemade donut pops was great.  The only thing that bothered Me (and probably just me) was that the munchkins I bought weren’t really round (are they usually?).  I’m pretty sure this is a personal problem. I know I have serious issues. Ha-ha… JK- well, no not really! 🙂

I hope you love this fun idea as muchas I did.

Donut Hole Pops

Ingredients

  • 25 Donut Holes fresh
  • 12 oz Candy Melts White
  • 25 lollipop sticks
  • Sprinkles and decors for decorating

Instructions

  • Melt the chocolate.
  • Dip the tip of the lollipop stick into the chocolate then gently insert it into the donut hole about 1/2 way through. Place the pops on a parchment lined baking sheet and place in the freezer for 15 minutes(or until lollipop stick is set into place).
  • Once the sticks have set into the donut hole dip them into the chocolate. Invert the donut pop downward into the melted chocolate. Plunge it right it in (as gentle as possible) and pull up and down a few times, and then gently swirl and tap the pop (while still upside down) until all the excess chocolate is gone. Turn the donut pop upwards and set into a glass or container that will hold the pops without them tipping over.
  • While still wet sprinkle with your favorite colors.
  • Once the pops hardened in the freezer/refrigerator remove them immediately. My pops took about 10 minutes in the freezer. The freezer can cause the chocolate to crack so remove them as soon as they harden. Keep them at room temperature.

 TIPS:

  • Melting the chocolate:  You can melt the chocolate in a double boiler with a tablespoon of crisco shortening. Stirring constantly until thoroughly melted and fluid. If you melt in the microwave – start by placing the chocolate in a microwave safe bowl with the crisco. Cook for 1 minute on half power and then stir. Then continue to melt in 3o second intervals – stirring in between each burst. When chocolate is fluid stop and let stand. Generally I only use the crisco when I am using the candy melts. It helps smooth out the chocolate and make dipping easier.
  • Be Gentle: When inserting the stick into the donut hole be careful not to push in to far or it will come out the other end and the donut might crumble.  But if you do, you might be able to salvage a few by pulling back on the stick and pressing down on the top of the donut to smooth it out.  Once the donut is covered in chocolate you won’t see the blemish.
  • Be Patient: Make sure to let the Lollipop stick harden. Do not skip this part or you’ll probably have a swimmer. If the chocolate doesn’t harden enough that little sucker will dive right into the chocolate and you’ll be stuck fishing it out.
  • Save the broken pops: I suggest saving the broken or damaged pops for the end so you don’t end up with crumbs in your melted chocolate.
  • Work in Batches:  If you don’t have one of those fancy cake pop drying racks place them in a glass/ceramic cup (like in the profile picture).  Work in small batches (they harden quick), otherwise the pops will touch each other and smudge if you overfill. It will also be harder to transfer the glass to the refrigerator/freezer without them tipping out ( I had a few donut pops kamikaze out of my glass while trying to place them into the freezer…)
